Anyway, the composition is pretty good but I would've liked some more negative space on the left hand side (where his hand it pointing at) and his right elbow seems a bit low for human anatomy (of course he doesn't seem to be human so you could write it off as that). Like the use of the simple background and how it's lit up by the lighting.
Hee, thanks! ^^

Hi all, new here, I stumbled across this page while looking for other artwork.
My artwork is somewhat different then most I've seen. I draw mostly realistic traditional portraits. Although I dont really consider myself one, most say some of my portraits are at a proffesional level, or mistaken for photographs. Lol, I'd be better if I actually put out a finished drawing more than once a year.
Anyways, if anyone wants some advice on how to make your characters more realistic. Shading, porportions, etc. Feel free to message me on DA.

I think once you add the shadows and such, as you mentioned, it will make the picture come together. I'd say definitely add some type of background - a scene or even just some kind of design, or just a solid color. Negative space is very important to a piece of art and it could really make this one wonderful.

So I'm hoping to be able to get a table in Artist Ally this year and I recently joined the world of copic markers. What do you think? http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/ ... 499q8u.jpgIs it okay without a background? I have issues with bagrounds....I can't do much with them. BUT I'M WORKING HARD ON IT NOW

I personally have never used the markers, but I think that there could be some more intermediate stages between your light and dark shades, especially in the hair when you go from the golden color to the orangey. Let the orange fade into the gold as opposed to bam that's where I switched colors.

Well that sucks. I mean, I've got the speed painting video to prove I didn't, but how can I make it look better?

Heh. I'm actually kinda embarrassed to post this. But, bam! http://disastrous-dreams.deviantart.com/That's my DA. First one ever. I haven't officially drawn anything in the longest time and just got back into it. My friend and I are debating getting a table in a year or two for artist alley and I'm working hard to get back into the drawing habit. Critiques are loved. <3

You're lineart is really clean But the shadows need to be a little bolder. It's kind of light to it makes it look kind of flat.

But... your speed paintings prove that you do so with a lot of your other realistic digital artwork. Like in that portrait of your friend Jordan. You not only traced the shape of her face, but the shadows as well. Same thing with that Green Lantern picture... I dunno. Maybe my definition of tracing is different than yours?

I think our definitions do differ a little there. To me, to trace a work realistically, you'd have to leave the original image under it and constantly pick up colors from it. I mean, I use the outlines and such as more of a guide. The values--since I don't use variations of hues--are completely of my own talents. It'd be different if I were to trace it and create lineart from it to create a cartoon of it...
But aside from that, and I know this will sound bad, but I didn't even use a base/model/stock image for this particular piece and I'm not exactly sure how to prove it. I'm prepared to make a video pulling apart the original PSD if you want. I can show you some of my other realistic pieces I'm working on if that'll help....

But you trace the basic values and their locations. It's good for practice, but I still consider it tracing. If your so forthcoming about producing proof of the last one, I'll let that one be, but the fact that a portion of your art is made directly from drawing over an original image makes me wonder what else you did that to. To me, what you're doing is the same as people who trace anime characters, recolor them, and call them artwork. And if that's what your opinion of artwork is, I can't change that. However, since I don't consider it to be so, and other people might not consider it to be so, your artwork that uses such a technique may not sell too well. Just a thought.
